Maybe summer break is getting to me, but I have recently been going down the F1 rabbit hole on this sub, and I saw how many people either downplay Lewis's high-tier rookie season or exaggerate certain circumstances that are supposedly supposed to defile his achievement. Especially surrounding the Preseason Testing rumors. I want to address the biggest claims that many people spout that either lack context or are just plain untrue.

The "Unlimited Testing" Myth

While 2007 regulations allowed extensive unlimited testing, data shows Alonso logged more total kilometers and laps in the same car in pre-season testing. Extensive testing was standard for all teams back then. Also, his teammate the next year, Kovalainen, logged 3.5x more than him at 28,000 miles. And that's just preseason. Lewis was a dev driver at McLaren for barely a year. If we account for other f1 drives before their debut, Massa and Rosberg were way ahead of him in "preparation". And even if Lewis didn't do all of that, beating the reigning 2x world champion is still insane.

The "Favouritism / Sabotage at McLaren" Myth

Most people think that McLaren started the year treating both drivers equally, which quickly escalated into a bitter internal civil war. However, from the beginning, McLaren also exclusively hedged their bets on Alonso. Hamilton was told not to expect to be as fast as Alonso. In the opening race, they put Lewis on the heavier fuel and subordinate strategy to Alonso. Of course, this is probably a normal procedure as all Teams do this more or less, but to assume somehow that Lewis was some privileged child is ridiculous. The same thing happened in Monaco, and throughout the first 6 races, yet Lewis was still ahead of Alonso despite this.McLaren never “helped” Lewis until post-Hungary, and that’s because Alonso undermined the team & ruined himself with Spygate, not to mention hiring a PI to check his car to make sure McLaren didn’t tamper with it. (Spoiler: they didn't)

The "He Only Won Because of the Car" Myth

Alonso in equal machinery as a first-year driver. Hamilton secured nine consecutive podiums from his very first race, won races on merit (including masterclasses in wet conditions like Fuji ), and led the championship for a large portion of the year against seasoned drivers. Also, as is common knowledge in this Sport (or should be), the best drivers most oftentimes gravitate towards the best teams. We aren't forgetting Lewis was an absolute beast in the feeder Series. He also showed his mettle as the Best by doing what he couldn't the next year by beating Massa in 08.
