This 1970 Alpine A110 1600 S is a Group 4 competition variant that was sold on BaT in March 2023 and profiled later that year. It has since undergone mechanical sorting at Competition Motors Ltd of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, along with extensive historical research verifying its Works origins. The car is powered by a Weber-carbureted 1,605cc OHV inline-four and finished in a blue, red, white, and black livery. Equipment includes staggered-width multipiece 13″ Gotti wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Cibie driving lights, an electrically heated Triplex windshield, a central 90-liter fuel tank, a Devil exhaust system, a roll cage, fixed-back bucket seats, and a Halda Twinmaster trip meter. This Group 4 A110 is now offered on dealer consignment with historical documentation, a Gilles Vallerian dossier, period service records, and a clean New Hampshire title.
The A110 1600 was homologated for Group 4 competition in 1970, allowing Alpine’s works team to field lightened variants in international rallying. This car is chassis 16610, which was assembled by the Dieppe competition department in 1970 and fitted with Works body number 2610. Kept by the factory throughout the 1970 season as an un-raced backup car, it was subsequently sold in early 1971 to privateer Jacques Henry for the French Rally Championship. Registered on French plates “70 GL 70,” this chassis was campaigned by Henry across 10 rounds of the 1971 championship, including a first-place overall/class victory at the Critérium Alpin.
For decades, the car’s early history was misidentified by an administrative factory error that mistakenly conflated chassis 16610 with body 2606—a sister Works car that actually raced in the 1970 season using the same registration plates later assigned to 16610. This paperwork mix-up was recently resolved by marque historian Gilles Vallerian, who cross-referenced original factory ledgers and registration records to untangle the two cars’ identities. In March 2025, the current owner found a factory team key fob wired to the emergency brake bracket with the registration number on one side and the car’s factory body number 2610 on the other. This physical discovery, along with Vallerian’s research and the unique factory team identification number, established the car’s identity as the ex-Jacques Henry 1971 French Championship contender.
The Works-spec lightweight fiberglass bodywork is underpinned by a steel backbone chassis. This example also sports flared fenders, a detachable rear apron, plastic bumperettes, Cibie headlights under plexiglass covers, and lower Cibie fog lights. The car was refinished in its current blue, white, red, and black livery by Peter Müller in Switzerland between 1995 and 1999, and the roof displays the signature of factory driver Jean Vinatier. The Triplex electrically heated front windshield bears a “SEPT 1970” date code and exhibits a 7-inch fix-bonded hairline crack on the right side. The front hood retention pins were fitted to the correct size under current ownership.
Multipiece 13″ Gotti X13 wheels feature orange three-lug centers and are wrapped in Avon Formula Z racing tires measuring 180/530 up front and 250/570 at the rear. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs, and the brake fluid was flushed under current ownership. The independent suspension includes adjustable rose-jointed radius rods, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and front and rear anti-roll bars.
The cockpit houses fixed-back bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl with quilted inserts. Additional features include sliding plexiglass vent windows, black carpeting, a 30mm roll cage, a passenger-side map light, contoured sun visors, a drilled reverse-lockout plate, and a drilled accelerator pedal. A Halda Twinmaster trip meter is mounted on the passenger side of the dash, and a removed red Sabelt four-point harness is included.
A MOMO Prototipo steering wheel frames green-letter Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 240-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel level, oil temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The gauges and switches were repaired and their wiring corrected under current ownership, and the speedometer drive and cable were repaired in February 2026. The five-digit odometer shows 34k kilometers (~21k miles), approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.
The rear-mounted 1,605cc OHV inline-four is believed to be a period replacement and features an aluminum block and cross-flow cylinder head. Works-spec equipment includes a central 90-liter fuel tank featuring a Le Bozec (L.B) filler cap stamped with a “10-70” date code, a high-output alternator, and a Devil four-into-one exhaust system.

Originally this A110 1600S was fitted with the normal, 1970/71 1,565cc, type VB engine competition engine used by the Alpine Factory Team and some client racers. For 1973 it was upgraded with the latest type competition engine, a 1,605cc, type VC engine prepared by Alpine race specialist Michelle Ferry. The engine remains in the car today. And both the Michelle Ferry and Alpine engine number stamps confirm this. This is a fairly rare variant and in stock form was rated at 155bhp, up from the VB engines 125bhp. The main changes were increasing the bore from 77mm to 78mm while keeping the 84mm stroke, allowing Alpine to cross into a higher displacement class for rallying. Internal changes also included cam shaft timing, ignition timing, carburetor jetting and a raised compression ratio.
Mechanical servicing under current ownership at Competition Motors included sealing a leak at the central fuel bladder outlet, fabricating a fuel sender gasket, replacing the oil pressure and coolant temperature senders, and flushing the cooling system. Additional work involved replacing ignition components and silicone hoses as well as rebuilding the twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetors and fitting them with air horns.
The engine is stamped with a Pierre Ferry Mécanique mark along with the type number MOT 844-32 No 1132.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Type 364-01 five-speed manual transaxle with a 3.55:1 final drive ratio. Drilled aluminum skid plates protect the front nose section and powertrain underbelly. In September 2025, the transaxle fluid was drained, a stripped drain plug was replaced with an oversized plug, and the underbody panels were reinstalled, and the engine oil and coolant were also changed along with the brake fluid.
Included in the sale are copies of period Alpine production ledgers, French road registration certificates, period competition photos, service invoices from 2023 through 2026, an original metal key tag stamped 7850GS76, and a comprehensive 2022 research dossier compiled by Alpine historian Gilles Vallerian.
